The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson | Review

Hello everyone!

I recently felt like I hadn't read anything that I wanted to read in a long time, I read my books for university and other than that, I kind of feel guilty when I read something that's not uni related. I was really starting to miss my usual fix of the horror genre though. My courses for uni are Shakespeare and Reading and Writing Children's literature, so as you can imagine there's not much horror included there.

As you may have seen in a previous haul, I bought two books to hopefully fill my horror needs, The haunting of Hill House being one of them. I just finished reading it so I thought I'd let you know what I think!

This novel was number 2 on Amazon's top most frightening reads list so I was expecting to be quaking in my boots when reading it. Truth be told, it wasn't that scary it is nonetheless psychologically very strange. When you read it you find yourself second guessing things that you think you already know. Parts of the book just make you wonder what's going on. What makes it more strange is that I'd previously seen the film adaptation of this book and forgot all about it so the whole thing felt like deja vu, that was pretty scary.

I think I was expecting this book to be supernaturally frightening but it really isn't, it is definitely more frightening in a psychological sense. The whole book just makes you feel like you've entered a mad house.

I don't want to tell anything of the storyline just in case any of you want to read it yourself. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something that delves in to the tricks of the mind but if you're looking for a ghostly fix, maybe you won't enjoy this as much! Overall though, this is a great read, it's easy reading, I managed to read it in a weekend and I'm a pretty slow reader. If you're not too into books but you're still interested I'd recommend you watch a film called The Haunting it's a pretty accurate adaptation and it features some pretty cool actors. You can see a trailer HERE

What books are you reading at the moment?
Has anyone got any scary recommendations?

See you next time,
Leanne x
